In a study by Nakhostin et al. (2025), researchers assessed the effectiveness of a procedure called percutaneous biliary neo-anastomosis (PBNA) for reconnecting bile ducts that were accidentally excluded during surgery. This technique involves using fluoroscopy (a type of imaging that shows a continuous X-ray image on a monitor) to guide the creation of a new connection between the bile ducts and the intestine. After the connection is made, a temporary drainage tube is placed to allow bile to flow from the liver to the intestines.

The results showed that PBNA, combined with temporary percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD), is not only feasible but also highly successful in restoring bile flow. The procedure demonstrated durability over time, indicating it could be a reliable long-term solution for patients with this complication. The study's findings are significant as they offer a promising option for correcting surgical errors affecting the bile ducts, potentially improving patient outcomes.

In the lead up to #RareDiseaseDay on 28th February next week, this week we are sharing information that highlights this year's Rare Disease Day slogan 'More Than You Can Imagine'.

This slogan is intended to highlight that rare diseases and the people living with them, as well as their families and carers, can be underrepresented or misunderstood by the public. It also aims to highlight and celebrate the diversity and unity of the over 300 million people living globally with one or several of the more than 6,000 identified rare diseases.
