Latest Research

In the study conducted by Bai et al. (2025), researchers investigated the potential causal links between various gastrointestinal traits and diseases, including primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and the risk of developing biliary tract cancer (BTC). The study utilized a network Mendelian randomization approach, which helps to determine if there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between risk factors and disease outcomes.

The findings revealed that while certain conditions like gallstone disease, cholecystitis, gallbladder polyps, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and ulcerative colitis showed a significant association with an increased risk of BTC, primary biliary cholangitis did not. The research, which included a large sample size ranging from 14,890 to 602,604 participants, concluded that there is no significant causal relationship between primary biliary cholangitis and an increased risk of BTC. This suggests that individuals with primary biliary cholangitis do not have a heightened risk of developing biliary tract cancer based on the genetic data analyzed in this study.

Today we celebrate #InternationalWomensDay.

A day that honours the achievements of women across all aspects of life - social, economic, cultural, and political - while also advocating for gender equality.

As an organisation founded by a woman, Collette Thain MBE, we benefitted from a powerful and driven woman who has worked tirelessly to #AccelerateAction and ensure the availability of support and accurate information for people affected by #PBC, and we continue to benefit from Collette's knowledge and lived experience.
