Latest Research

A recent study has explored genetic connections between type 1 diabetes and autoimmune liver diseases, including primary biliary cholangitis. This research aims to identify novel risk factors for primary biliary cholangitis through a genome-wide meta-analysis.

By examining genetic links with type 1 diabetes, researchers may uncover shared risk factors or pathways that could inform future treatments or prevention strategies. This work contributes to ongoing research into the complex interplay of genetics and environmental factors in autoimmune diseases, potentially revealing new insights into these conditions (Yu et al., 2025).

March is autoimmune awareness month.

In autoimmune conditions, the body’s immune system malfunctions and mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, and organs.

Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is a rare autoimmune condition in which the body attacks the cells lining the bile ducts within the liver as if they are foreign to the body itself, i.e., attacking its own cells.

Additionally, up to 50% of people with PBC are believed to have at least one other autoimmune condition with common comorbidities including:

- Sjogren's syndrome

- autoimmune thyroid disease

- autoimmune hepatitis

- pernicious anaemia

- celiac disease

The International PBC Summit 2025 starts in one week!

The Summit is a unique event taking place over four days during which stakeholders across PBC, including patient advocacy groups, clinicians, specialist nurses, specialist pharmacists, and industry partners, give everything we have to make the PBC journey easier, smoother and with better results.

Aspects that single out the Summit as something unique and special include:

🟣 The Summit has an itinerary but no agenda. The room decides where we go, what we focus on, how we get there.

🟣 The Summit is patient driven. 1 in 4 attendees is a patient or a patient advocate, ensuring that patients are part of every workgroup, every discussion, every single decision made in the room.

🟣 The floor has more power than the podium. Sure, whoever is at the podium is sharing thoughts, but the floor is where the real power lies, and the room itself carries more wisdom than the individual.
